Opening Sand
Sand: a virtual zen sand garden
A tray of warm sand made of tens of thousands of grains. Your finger or a five-tine rake shoves the sand into ridges, steep edges slump the way real sand does, and a low sun picks out every line.
How to play
- Drag across the tray to draw in the sand.
- Switch to the rake for neat parallel lines and circles.
- Pick a sand colour: Dune, Coral, Basalt or Moon.
- Press Smooth to let the sand settle flat and start again.
- Turn on sound for a soft sand hiss that follows your speed.
Questions
- Does it behave like a real sand tray?
- Yes. Sand piles up beside your stroke and slides down when a slope gets too steep, so raked lines hold their shape until you smooth them away.
- Is Sand free?
- Yes. Sand is free to play in your browser, with no ads, no sign-up and nothing to buy.
- Does Sand work on a phone?
- Yes. It works with touch on phones and tablets and with a mouse or trackpad on a computer, in any recent browser with WebGL 2.
